Getting started

Do you work with dispensaries in my state?

We take inquiries from licensed dispensaries in every state with legal cannabis retail, and the team behind this site has experience with more than 100 dispensaries nationwide. Whether placement, a purchase or a processing option is available is confirmed for your specific license and address before anything is agreed.

Is an ATM placement free for the dispensary?

In a typical placement the provider owns the machine and pays for the equipment, so the dispensary does not buy anything. “Free” is not the whole picture, though: the provider usually keeps most or all of the surcharge, and some placements ask the store to fund the cash. Read the agreement for who pays for what — our costs and contracts guide lists the questions.

Should we choose placement or buy our own ATM?

Placement suits a dispensary that wants cash access without tying up money or staff time in the machine. Ownership suits a store with steady withdrawal volume, people who can handle cash securely, and an interest in keeping the surcharge income. The placement vs. ownership guide compares both line by line.

What should I have ready before we talk?

Your license status and address, store hours and busy days, and — if you already have an ATM — its model, the current provider or processor, the contract end date and recent transaction reports. The consultation checklist is printable.

Cash, processing and rules

Who loads cash into a dispensary ATM?

It depends on the arrangement. In most placements the provider or its cash-service partner loads the machine. If you own the ATM, your staff or a cash-service company you hire loads it. Either way, agree in writing on the schedule, who watches cash levels and what happens on weekends and holidays.

Will an ATM processor accept a cannabis business?

Some processors and their sponsor banks work with licensed cannabis merchants and some do not, and policies change. Fit is reviewed for your license, state and ownership structure before you buy equipment or give notice on a current agreement. No one should promise acceptance before that review.

How is the ATM surcharge disclosed to customers?

Federal Regulation E requires an ATM operator that charges a fee to show a notice of the fee and its amount on the screen or on paper before the customer is committed to paying it; the customer can then choose not to continue. Who receives the surcharge depends on your agreement.

Does my state regulate where the ATM goes?

Some state cannabis rules address ATMs, cash or surveillance on licensed premises, and the rules differ. Our state rules resource links each state’s regulator and lists the ATM-specific provisions we have verified, with the date we checked. Your compliance lead and your regulator have the final word.

Can customers use EBT cards at a dispensary ATM?

Some states prohibit it. Colorado’s rules require stores with an ATM to prevent public-assistance (EBT) cash withdrawals and post a notice at the machine; Massachusetts bars EBT transactions, including ATM use, at marijuana establishments; and Arizona bars them at medical marijuana dispensaries. Details and sources are on the state rules page. Ask your provider or processor how EBT cards will be blocked.

Do you offer “cashless ATM” or card-at-the-counter workarounds?

No. This site covers ATMs that dispense physical cash from a customer’s own account. The purchase is then paid in cash at your counter.
